CHAPTER FIVE

Landon found Brian and Pavel cozied up in one of the dozen cabanas near The Beaudelaire's pool. They’d picked a cabana three rows back from the swimmers, and had a magnificent view of the stars that had come out since dinner. Landon had only meant to explore the grounds—with it being his first time in New Orleans, he wanted to sear into memory the city’s distinctive appeal—but good company didn’t sound like such a bad idea at the moment. He’d hoped they’d help him put things into perspective. They’d called him inside, handed him a beer, and had him vent his spleen.

“Maybe he’ll come around.” Pavel scooted a bit lower down the cushy, oversized sofa—an outdoor bed, really—and brought his fork down into his dessert. It was some decadent chocolate thing that the mere sight of made Landon’s stomach lurch. He liked chocolate as much as the next guy, but he generally preferred to consume it in portions smaller than bricks.

“He will ,” Brian said. He gave his lover a nudge with his elbow and took a long swig of his beer. “Makes sense to me if he didn’t care, at least a little, he would have left already. I certainly wouldn’t put myself through that kind of hell, not on purpose. I wouldn’t be able to be in the same room with Pavel if I were so eager to get rid of him.”

Pavel guffawed. “Yes you would. You’d want to fuck me even if I weren’t your boyfriend.”

“And then I’d feel guilty for not being able to stop myself. Your allure is simply too hard to ignore in the heat of passion.”

“If only I had that problem,” Landon said. He pulled his feet up onto to the cushion and watched the revelers splash in the soft glow of the pool. Fancy shit. Having a pretty healthy trust fund, he would have been able to afford a stay at The Beaudelaire even without Lana’s arrangements, but before now, he hadn’t been tuned into high society well enough to know about it or places like it. Wyoming wasn’t exactly a hot spot for five-star hotels, especially not hotels that sometimes doubled as sex clubs. Already, he’d learned to tune out the telltale gasps and moans as he navigated the hotel. And to think, the next week the place would return to being just a typical hotel.

“What do you mean?” Brian asked.

Landon shrugged. “Seems easy enough for Phil to keep his hands off me. Always has been, but it was different at first. Initially, I knew he was hesitant to touch me because of how we met. He used to call me jailbait. It was just a joke.” He added that last part preemptively and firmly . He didn’t want the men getting an undeserved negative perception about Phil. Landon had been well over the age of consent in every state, but Phil had insisted Landon was just a little lost lamb and that Phil was some kind of wolf.

“How is it different now?” Pavel asked.
